For the second year, the Geothermal Working Group (GTG) of the Cluster of Efficient Energy of Catalonia (CEEC), the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and the Catalan Institute of Energy (ICAEN) organize the Technical Conference 'GeoEnergia in Catalonia 'in order to promote and publicize the potential of geothermal energy as high-efficiency energy in the new framework of the Energy Transition and Climate Change. This year 2020, within a situation of health crisis caused by Covid19, the conference will take virtual format. It will be divided into two sessions on November 6 and 13, and will have a total of 8 presentations, divided into 2 sessions.
Geothermal energy is being the renewable energy catalyst for the decarbonisation process of buildings in Europe. The popularity of surface and deep geothermal energy has been growing rapidly in recent years with investments for the implementation of 4th and 5th generation urban heating and cooling grids (DHC) networks, and heat exchange systems with geothermal heat pumps through closed and open circuits - with groundwater capture -. With an already consolidated technology, it is the optimal energy for thermal self-consumption in urban areas: it does not depend on the availability of the soil, it is 100% indigenous and does not generate any type of combustion. According to the European Geothermal Council, (Market Report, EGEC 2019), Europe is the leader in the global market in DHC networks with an installed capacity of 5.5 GWth in 2019, while surface geothermal exchange systems at the same year exceeded 2 million geothermal heat pumps installed.
